What is Rose Water?
Rose water first gained traction back in the 16th century by the Persians located in the Middle East. They invented rose water by distilling rose petals with steam. This natural beauty regime has been traditionally used in both food, skincare, and drink products. Whether you have oily, dry, or combination skin, rose water can be added to your daily skincare and beauty regime. Check out the list below to view the potential health benefits rose water has to offer.
1. Rose water contains antioxidants that aids in neutralizing the free radicals within the skin. This means rose water can delay the process of aging.
We all know skin ages faster because of exposure to the harmful UV rays of the sun, due to the use of products laden with harsh chemicals, stress, an unhealthy lifestyle, and pollution. All of these factors assist the generation of free radicals that damage your skin. Free radicals are dangerous because these electrons cause damage to cells, proteins, and DNA. However, rose water is high in antioxidants and can reduce the free radicals within the skin.
2. You can use rose water as eye drops to help with various eye problems.
Rose water has been known to possess properties that can soothe and treat eye problems which include:
Conjunctivitis, which is also known as "pink eye": Conjunctivitis is an infection of the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is the thin transparent layer of tissue that is in the inner surface of the eyelid and covers the white part of the eye.
Conjunctival xerosis, which is also known as "dry eye": This is severe drying of the eye. This can be caused by a vitamin A deficiency.
Acute dacryocystitis: This can be characterized by chronic inflammation or infection of the lacrimal sac.
Degenerative conditions, such as "pterygium or pinguecula": The continuous growth of the conjunctiva or mucous membrane that can overlay the white part of your eye over the cornea.
Cataracts: Can affect your vision because of the cloudy layer that is formed over your eyes.
I highly recommend seeking advice from your doctor before treating any eye infections or eye problems with rose water.
3. Rose water can reduce skin redness, irritation, and balance the skin's PH level which can control excess oil production.
Rose water has been used as a beauty and skincare product for centuries, so it’s no coincidence that it can improve your skin's complexion, reduce any irritation, and redness. The antibacterial properties may help reduce acne as well. I have dry to oily skin and rose water has done wonders for me pertaining to acne. After months of using rose water, I've noticed that I have been breaking out less and the redness in my skin has vanished over time. The anti-inflammatory properties in rose water have helped skin redness, any irritation, and puffiness in my skin. It has also been reported that the properties rose water posses, may help an individual with eczema or rosacea.
4. Rose water posses antibacterial properties which helps aid in healing scars, cuts, and wounds.
Rose water has effective and potent antiseptic properties, which can prevent and treat infections. Rose water can be found in an assortment of natural and medicinal treatments. It has been reported that its antiseptic and analgesic properties helped in treating ocular disease. However, before treating any wounds or diseases I highly recommend seeking advice from your doctor.
5. Rose water can lighten dark circles.
You can use rose water to lightening dark circles by creating a DIY mask. First, use a bowl and put 2 tablespoons of milk and rose water in it. After mixing, place a cotton ball into the mixture and leave it for 20 minutes. Take the DIY mask and apply it under your eyes and allow it to set, this may take up to an hour. Rinse off with cold water and repeat the procedure daily for effective and powerful results.
If you would like to make your own DIY rose water, I recommend not using store-bought roses. Store-bought roses are typically dyed and are sprayed with various pesticides. You can purchase pesticide-free roses at a farmer's market or online.
How to Make Your Own Rose Water at Home (DIY):
Purchase pesticide-free roses that are not dyed and are 100% natural. Dry roses can work great as well.
Measure 1/4 cup of dried rose petals into a pot. Use 1/2 to 3/4 cup if you are using fresh petals.
Pour 1 1/2 cups water into the pot.
Cover with a lid and let it boil.
Lower the temperature to the lowest setting and let the water simmer.
Simmer until the color of the rose petals is no longer visible. It will become colorless and takes between 5-10 minutes to occur.
Let the water cool, then use a strainer to collect the pedals.
Place rose water into a bottle or container.
Shelf life for DIY rose water can range from one week of use to several weeks based on how you store it. I recommend keeping it in the refrigerator to maximize shelf life.
